My college golf coach used to say that there is no feeling in the world better then the feeling of a solidly struck golf ball.
Most golfers that average between 75 and 85 hit about 25% of their shots on the sweet spot. The other 75% are struck decently but only carry about 85% of the maximum distance. In fact, if you start to really pay attention, look at the amount of times you end up short on your approach shots verses the amount of time you end up over the green. My guess is that your statistics will indicate a 4:1 ratio.
So here are two solutions:
1. When in doubt, choose the longer club. This one is obvious but I see golfers making this mistake 99 times out of 100. Our egos get in the way and we choose the 7 iron instead of the 6 and end up in the front bunker. You may look cool, but your scorecard won’t.
2. The key to hitting perfectly solid shots is being able to feel the club head throughout the swing. When you can feel the club head rather then focusing analytically on the mechanics during your swing, you’ll consistently strike the ball like the pros.
Try this drill. Swing the club around your body on the plane of a baseball swing. Swing forward and backwards and keep the club head moving until you can really feel the weight of the club head. Keep doing it until you really get the sensation in your body and then step up and rip a shot. It is essential to do this with each club before you hit a shot. The top PGA Tour pros do it all the time – it’s called a waggle.
But don’t just waggle it like the pros, exaggerate it so you really get the feel by using your full range of motion until you can really feel the weight of that club.
Now go make some birdies!
